Middle School
Adolescence is a time of radical change and growth. Montessori believed that young adolescents need a stable environment that develops trust and community during this period, but also need chances to explore and serve the community at large. In our Montessori middle school program, we respond to the developmental needs of adolescence, while at the same time provide a sound academic environment.
Montessorians have always advocated a fully-integrated academic program of studies, and research in recent years has borne out the effectiveness of this approach. Our academic program features a widely integrated curriculum in which American and world history; geography; physical, earth, and biological science; literature; and personal issues are woven into broad-based themes. Math, grammar, vocabulary, and writing are individually paced. In addition, we offer foreign language, band, and art. Adolescence is widely recognized by Montessori and others as a time when a person forges his identity. The adolescent needs a variety of life experiences to develop a solid base of judgment from which to make life choices. An essential feature of our Level III program is the community service and community internship required of each student. Our students also participate in large building projects and various workshops such as CPR, rock climbing, and sewing during short immersion periods throughout the year. Students also develop and operate a class business, participate in a ROPES course, and go on an annual adventure trip. By empowering adolescents with a supportive community, a meaningful curriculum, and valuable experiences in the real world, we help them create a strong bridge to adulthood. Read about our Land Lab |
